Payment Policy

Updated February 15, 2022

The below policy is represented in the consent documents that are a part of the enrollment process. Please read closely as you will be asked to sign off on these as a condition of engagement.

TLDR: I expect you to be responsible about paying for services rendered, starting with providing a credit card to keep on file.

Stated plainly, therapy is a trade of money for services. Your understanding and agreeing to clear terms of payment allows me to focus on providing the best support I can.

The following points are offered to help you understand my approach to billing and collecting payment for services.

I require a valid credit card to be kept on file. You are invited to add this during the intake process in the Client Portal. If you should choose to add a card in person, I’ll be glad to take that at our in-person appointment. Most HSA cards accept my charges as qualified expenses, so feel free to add an HSA card if you want.

Payment is due when services are rendered. Unless we have made alternate payment arrangements, my billing system automatically generates invoices and charges the card on file on a nightly basis.

  • If you are paying for services out-of-pocket, you will be charged the agreed to fee.

  • If you are paying for services using out-of-network insurance, you will also be charged the agreed to fee. I have the ability to submit out-of-network claims with some insurance companies. If I can do so with your company, I will be glad to help (courtesy filing). Otherwise, I will email you a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company directly.

  • If you are paying for services with your BCBS, Aetna or Tricare (the only insurance companies I’m currently paneled with), you will be charged either your copay or coinsurance. Where that specific fee is unclear, you will not be charged on the day of services. Instead, I will submit the claim to insurance and the balance (whether the correct copay or my contracted rate, if you are still under your deductible) will be charged automatically on the day an EOB is returned to me.

All billing documents are delivered by email as a link to the document in the Client Portal where they are stored in a secure, organized location. Invoices are generated nightly. The other documents are generated on a monthly basis (and delivered on the 10th day of the month; you may request the most current document at any point in time).

The following documents are accessible in the client portal:

  • Invoices - Invoices are bills for generically termed ‘Professional services.’ For most clients, the invoice will be paid automatically and effectively irrelevant.

  • Statements - Statements provide documentation of dates and fees paid for ‘professional services.’ Statements are what would your accountant might request to document a business deduction (‘Consultation’) on your taxes.

  • Superbills - Superbills provide the documentation your insurance company would require for filing a claim, including: your name, address, DOB, diagnosis, service code, dates of service and my credentials.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email or phone me directly. You will be asked to affirm your agreement to this policy in the enrollment process.

Using Health Insurance

I have a contract with a limited number of health insurance panels, including BCBS (PPO), Aetna (PPO) and Tricare. I’ve written a short guide to checking your health insurance benefits, which you can access here.
